Founding impulse, goals and working methods

The Baden-Württemberg Integrative Medicine Competence Network is an association of clinics, medical care networks, and research institutes. Since our founding on November 30, 2017, we have been working on the development, implementation, and evaluation of integrative treatment concepts. Our vision: a steadily growing network that stands for the effectiveness, quality, and safety of integrative medicine.

"Integrative medicine" describes the combination of complementary conventional and complementary treatment options within a patient-centered care concept. Alongside guideline-based, professional medical care, treatment and counseling services from the fields of naturopathy and complementary medicine are offered. These include natural remedies, traditional treatment methods such as acupuncture, nursing applications like compresses and rubs, aromatherapy, and mind-body therapies (art and music therapy, MBSR/meditation, eurythmy therapy, yoga, Tai Chi, etc.). Furthermore, it involves targeted advice and support for implementing health-promoting lifestyle changes in everyday life.
The KIM aims to: network clinical centers and projects with outpatient integrative medicine services and create high-quality treatment options; develop and evaluate treatment modules and pathways for diseases and symptoms, incorporating the patient perspective; create networked training and continuing education opportunities; develop quality criteria and a quality label for integrative medicine as a basis for future certification; and develop models for implementing integrative medicine in everyday clinical practice.

Greeting from patron Manne Lucha

– Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Integration of Baden-Württemberg –
Ladies and gentlemen, many patients in Baden-Württemberg desire a diverse range of therapies and complementary medicine services. We are therefore committed to ensuring barrier-free access to quality-assured integrative medicine for everyone. As patron of the Baden-Württemberg Integrative Medicine Competence Network, I am delighted that hospitals and outpatient networks are jointly addressing this important task. The goal is to develop and implement effective and safe treatment concepts. Practice and research are working closely together in this endeavor. I wish the participating physicians, nursing experts, and all other contributors every success!

Projects & working groups at KIM

We review and evaluate treatment methods from various traditions of naturopathy and complementary medicine,

with which many years of experience already exist in the clinical routine of oncology ("best practice"). In accordance with the principles of evidence-based medicine, we review the following in detail:
Knowledge and skills of experienced treatment teams, supplemented by data from scientific studies on safety and efficacy.

In a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, and therapists from participating clinics, we develop integrative treatment recommendations for the most common and serious symptoms of cancer, as well as side effects of cancer treatments. These recommendations utilize particularly effective and safe therapies that can be readily implemented in everyday clinical practice. Our treatment concepts focus on proven and practical methods that can be learned and practiced by oncologists, nurses, and therapists even without prior training in complementary medicine. We are currently working on treatment recommendations for the complementary and integrative management of chemotherapy-induced polyneuropathy, as well as diarrhea and constipation in the context of oncology.

In a multi-professional working group with experts from the participating clinics and the network of outpatient physicians, nurses, and therapists in Heidenheim, we developed exemplary treatment recommendations for bronchitis and urinary tract infections. The working group is currently inactive.

In an interprofessional working group with experts from the network of outpatient physicians, nurses, therapists, and patients in Heidenheim, we developed exemplary treatment recommendations for respiratory and urinary tract infections. The working group is currently inactive.
